Colburn Special - Coburn Special fly

Colburn Special is a fly fishing fly that forms a series of flies.  The other fly patterns are Claret(red) and orange Colburn Special.  There has also  been tied an additional Colburn Special salmon fly which is blue.  Colburn Special is a salmon fly that has caught salmon up to 30 lbs in Iceland.  Most popular in sizes are 12 and 14 but in heavy stream and difficult fishing conditions this fly is also used in sizes 4 - 8. Colburn Special are Fly fishing flies that you should try when fishing for Atlantic salmon, Steelhead and sea trout.  

Colburn Special - What Time of the year should you use Colburn Special    

Colburn special salmon fly is mainly a mid summer and autumn fly.  It should  also be be in your fly box when fly fishing for salmon at spring time. A good rule with green flies is to used them when the environment is greenish.  When you have rough conditions in the spring or in the autumn another good fly is the Green Highlander Tube fly

Colburn Special - conditions   

Colburn Special is a good overall salmon fly in all conditions but experts say that you can make the best of it when water level is high and the river has a  green color. Colburn special it is also a good fishing fly in clear water in the autumn specially when water level is low (fished on small flies).  In spring this fly pattern is good on bright days when the fish is running up the river.  

Tip:  Try this flies when it starts to dawn and fish it into the darkness.  You might get surprises.

Colburn Special history   

Tied by Bates and it is originally from Penobscot River in Main. There are several variations: the other colors are Blue, Red and Orange.
