Collie dog salmon fly

Salmon fly that was originally tied in the 18th century and still being one of the best flies salmon hair-wing fly fishing flies in the world. Although it is simple, it has proven to be extremely deadly and if you are going to fish for Atlantic salmon then this fly is a must in your fly box.


Tip:  Try to use the tube version when you fish for sea trout.

Conditions   
Can be fished in all types of weather, water and season, In fast running water or floods. It can be fished on a brass tube or with cone.

In normal conditions an aluminum tube, plastic tube, trebles, doubles or singles is recommended and on sunny warm days when water level is low a smaller version is recommended.  Micro flies have been deadly in extremely difficult situations when the salmon is not running and water level is low.  Hitch version of this fly has become one of the deadliest weapons found in Iceland. It does no’t matter if its fished in fast running streams, slow running steams below waterfalls or just wherever you can see it skate.  Hitch is probably the most exciting fishing methods around today.

History   
In UK, Scotland and Ireland old farmers and landowners usually had a Border Collie dog and they had to use what they had to make their flies.

How to fish   
Deadly fly when stripped fast across the stream in long strokes or small strokes. When fished on tubes it has also been successful to let the tube just drift across the stream and when its reaching your side of the bank slowly strip it towards you.
