Frances salmon flies are probably the most famous of all Icelandic fly fishing flies. Our salmon flies are professionally tied and tried tried by our Icelandic guides to meet highest standards available.

Black frances and red frances is  has caught almost 50% of all salmons caught on fly in Iceland.  It has also proven as a killer fly pattern in Russia, Norway, Canada, Scotland, Ireland and other places where Atlantic salmons run. The shape of frances fly is indicating a shrimp and some say that Frances is an imitation of the Black Eye Prawn Fly.  The most famous colors are red and black but other colors have been proven themselves in different situations over the years.

These salmon flies have also be a big success for sea trout, mainly when using heavy brass tubes.  It has been fished with good result for sea trout in Iceland, Argentina and Chile.

Conditions   
Frances salmon flies is good in all conditions but experts recommend it in slow running water, in eddies and below waterfalls.  Usually fished mid season in normal conditions but work through out the year.

Body: Wool (color of the fly),
Body hackle: small brown rooster feather for black and red flies,
Feelers: Brown or/and grizzly feathers for the feelers
Tail: Brown calf tail
Rib: Gold tinsel
Thread: (same color as the fly)
Head: Same color as the fly except black frances has yellow head

How to fish   
Early season a large types ( 1", ½") of flies are usually more effective when salmon are running.  Mid season the smaller sizes have been more effective and when conditions are difficult, low water or hot sunny days, the smaller sizes can make a difference.  You should always try to have the fly in the same depth as the fish and early season the best way to fish this fly is to keep it close to the bottom.  To achieve this you can use sinking tip fly flies or just sinking tips with different sink types.  All depends on the depth of the pool. 
Effective when fished across the stream with twitching pulls.
