Top 5 best salmon tube flies for Iceland fly fishing

Iceland is not the cheapest destionantion for fly fishing so you better be prepered before you head on to one of the best fly fishing destinations in the world. When you go to Iceland for fly fishing for atlantic salmon there is nothing more important then having the correct salmon tube flies with you.  If you have the wrong flies for atlantic salmon with you it could mean that you spend a lot of time fishing without having any result. Anyone who fishes doesn't wants to deal with this situation, it is vital that you make sure that you have the correct set of salmon tube flies for Iceland before you even venture out.

#1 - Riffling hitch tube - Collie Dog

 
 

The most simpliest fly of them all... but still deadly.  Its unbelievable how many salmon this tube fly catches each year when fly fishing Iceland .  Not only its a killer tube fly pattern, its also the most exciting tube fly pattern to fish.  Riffling hitch design makes the tube fly pattern skid on the surface of the stream which will attract salmon in difficult conditions.  When the salmon takes the hitch tube, you will experience the take itself.  You should have at least few different hitch tubes with you when you go fly fishing Iceland.

Sometimes the salmon will come to the fly serveral times before hooking itself.  Remember never to stop the fly and keep the same rythm all the time.  Try not to make the fly fishing fly hitch to fast, try to keep consistant speed on the fly all the time.

 #2 - Red Frances 1" copper/brass tube

 

Frances salmon tube flies are probably the most famous of all Icelandic fly fishing flies. Im not lying to you when I say that in some rivers almonst 50% of all salmon caught on fly are caught on this fly.  Of course there are many different variations of this fly - Frances black trebles, frances red trebles, Frances tube etc but overall this fly has will be one of Iceland best salmon tube flies. So before fly fishing Iceland, you should get few different variation of Frances tube salmon flies.

 #3 - Sun Ray Shadow

 
Now few of my guiding friends in Iceland are not going to be happy with me when I say this tube fly is on my top 5 list... but what the heck. I always have a set of Sun Rays salmon tubes in my box when I go fly fishing in Iceland.  Sun Ray salmon fly fishing tube flies are a long wing flies, tied on a plastic tube in a really simple way. If you need tube flies that will shock the pool and start to move the atlantic salmon, you should try this fly.  Strip if fast across the pool and hold on tight, salmon strike this tube fly pattern when fished fast.

#4 - Collie Dog tube 

 

Another simple tube that still is really successful when fly fishing for salmon. This fly will work all season and will easily catch some atlantic salmon in cold waters of the  spring but also hook some salmons in the autumn.  Always carry some Collie Dog tube flies for atlantic salmon in your box when you go to Iceland... you will be rewarded.

#5 - Snaelda German (Þýsk snælda)

 

This Icelandic fly pattern has also proven itself in around the world when fishing for Atlantic salmon. This is often used as the last change fly. The most famous types are the German, Black and Red but other colors are also popular.
