What is fly fishing?
Many people ask me this question, what is fly fishing. I remember one of my colleague asking me about fly fishing, I started to talk about that we use rods with artificial fly which is usally made from feathers and fur. Then this fly would be cast to a stream or a lake where is usually float on top of the surface. She was amazed that it was actually possible to catch "flies" (Im talking about real life flies - bugs) with a hook with feathers attached :)
As you see many people dont know anything about fly fishing or what it is. We will try to explain to you the basics of fly fishing, fly casting, fly tying and talk about general fly fishing tips in articles and posts under this page. More articles will be available with time and you can read them here.
What is fly tying
One of the best parts about fly fishing is learning to make your own fly fishing flies. There is nothing more satisfying then seeing a fish take a fly that you did yourself. I remember my first fly fishing fish. It was at Elliðavatn in Iceland, I was only 9 years old and I just tied up some scary bugs to try to attract trouts in this lake. Fly fishing was new for me and I didn't have the internet by that time to search for some fly fishing tips. My flies were far from being "natural" with a mix of blue, purple and orange colors - all tied on trout hooks nr. 2. My idea was that bigger flies = bigger fish, this was all the fly fishing tips that I knew. For some strange reason a 10 cm trout caught my fly and I was able to land my first trout on a fly fishing fly, even if the fly was more like a monster then a anything else. Still I was the happiest 9 year old kid that day and I brought home my first fly fish that my mom had to cock for me that evening. I cant say I remembered eating that fish but the momory of my first fly fish still remains.
As you can see fly tying is something that every angler and fly fisherman has to try once. Fly tying is the art of creating fishing lures called "flies" that resembles the food chain for different types of fish (not always). We will talk about out experience as fly tyers and we will post many fly fishing tips about this topics.
